The galleries below will help you understand what the spaces in Beaver Works offer, and how we can best serve your needs. Please contact us to reserve a classroom, a maker space, or a collaboration space.
NE45 – Tech Square Classroom
Capacity & Layout
- Total Capacity: Approximately 40 seats.
- Dividable into Two Rooms:
- Small Classroom: Seats about 18.
- Large Classroom: Seats about 32.
- Flexible Seating: Equipped with movable tables and chairs, allowing for various seating arrangements to suit different activities from lectures to workshops.
AV Equipment
- Projector Screens: Two motorized screens are available.
- Projectors: Each screen is paired with a projector, supporting HDMI inputs for connectivity, and can be either separate or duplicate displays
- Additional Display: A portable monitor is also available for presentations or collaborative work.
- MIT Zoom Room: Dual camera integrated zoom room with ceiling microphone for remote attendees
- Wireless microphones for speaker use
Connectivity & Amenities
- Wi-Fi: MIT Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the space.
- Break Area: A café area is available with a coffee maker, hot water pot, sink, microwave, and small refrigerator with area for catering setup.
NE45 Tech Square Maker Space
Capacity & Layout:
- Accommodates roughly 10 people.
- Open-concept layout with movable tables, chairs, and whiteboards allowing flexible arrangements for projects.
- Limited project storage
Equipment & Features:
- Digital Fabrication Tools: 3D printer, laser cutter, and CNC machine
- Electronics: Soldering stations, test equipment
- Hand Tools: Basic hand tools, power tools, and assembly stations.
- Prototyping: Lathe, knee Mill, band saw, sheet metal bender, and drill press
- Safety/Chemical Handling: Fume Hood for experiments that involve fumes, chemicals or other vapors
- Hazardous Waste: Auxiliary storage area provides pickup location
Access & Usage:
- Orientation and training is required before use or access is given
- Suitable for collaborative prototyping, coursework and BWSI-related activities.
Building 31 Maker Space
Capacity & Layout:
- Accommodates roughly 10 people.
- Large table tops designed to fit together to build large wings or other sizable projects.
Equipment & Features:
- Prototyping Tools: 3D printer, laser cutter, drill press
- Electronics: Soldering stations, test equipment
- Safety/Chemical Handling: Fume Hood for experiments that involve fumes, chemicals or other vapors
Access & Usage:
- Orientation and training is required before use or access is given
- Suitable for collaborative prototypiing, coursework and BWSI-related activities.
NE45 Cambridge Café Space – Beaver Works
Capacity & Layout:
- Accommodates roughly 15–20 people comfortably.
- Open layout with fixed seating.
- Suitable for small group discussions, informal meetings, or breaks between classes or workshop sessions.
Features & Amenities:
- Refreshments: Coffee maker, hot water pot, microwave, refrigerator, and sink.
- Display: Can use an optional screen or monitor or whiteboard for informal presentations or project discussions.
- Break Area: Casual space to relax, eat, and recharge during long work or lab sessions.
Access & Usage:
- Open to Beaver Works staff, students, and program participants.
- No formal orientation required.
- Ideal for coffee breaks, informal meetings, or collaborative brainstorming sessions.
To Access Beaver Works Prototype Shop:
To use the MakerSpace or the Prototype Shop in Beaver Works, please follow these steps:
Step 1. Join the Beaver Works group and complete the required training. Beaver Works has two training groups. Click on the training group name below to join the appropriate group.
Beaver Works – General: Join this group if you are conducting projects that do not require you to use machinery and/or a fume hood. The required training for joining this group is
- EHS00496s Beaver Works Safety Orientation.
Beaver Works – Prototype: Join this group if you are accessing the Beaver Works prototype area and will be using the industrial equipment. The required trainings for joining this group are
- EHS00100 Gen Chemical Hygiene,
- EHS00485 Intro to Shop Safety,
- EHS00501 Managing Hazardous Waste, and
- EHS00496s Beaver Works Safety Orientation
Step 2. Once you have joined the group, the MIT Atlas Learning Center will list the required training to complete under My Training Needs. The Facility Manager will provide access after completion of training is verified.
Note: Users are expected to sign in each time they use the Prototype Shop.
