Internships

More than 200 undergraduate and graduate students from universities and military academies from across the country participate in the Laboratory's Summer Research Program each year. Interns must be US citizens.

All Lincoln Laboratory internships offer a paid position that lasts from 4 weeks to 3 months with work in a technical field that complements the student’s course of study. Work will be performed at the Lexington site. Housing is provided on MIT campus. Transportation between MIT campus and Lincoln Laboratory is provided.

Student interns at Lincoln Laboratory perform hands-on work on real projects, learn from national experts in STEM fields, access the Laboratory's state-of-the-art resources, and present their research results at the end of the summer.

MIT Internships:

  • MIT Research Assistantships – Working with Lincoln Laboratory engineers and scientists, MIT graduate students contribute to sponsored programs while investigating the questions that evolve into their doctoral theses.
  • MIT Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) – MIT's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program cultivates research partnerships between MIT undergraduates and faculty, offering students the chance to work on cutting-edge research and participate in each phase of standard research activity.
  • MIT’s Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP) – Part of this full-year program for MIT sophomores is a 10- to 12-week internship in industry, government, or a nonprofit institution. Lincoln Laboratory collaborates with MIT to host UPOP interns.
Summer research interns help to build the MicroMAS CubeSat to demonstrate microwave sounding of the atmosphere from a miniature satellite about the size of a loaf of bread.

Lincoln Laboratory Internships:

  • Summer Research Program – Each summer, Lincoln Laboratory offers undergraduate and graduate students the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a leading-edge research environment.
  • Marshallese IT Internship Program – Kwajalein Field Site staff lead a 10-week summer internship for residents of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
  • Co-op Education Program – Lincoln Laboratory employs students from MIT, Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and other area universities as full-time co-ops throughout the year.

BWSI Internships

  • BWSI Teaching Assistantships - Undergraduate and graduate students support the Beaver Works Summer Institute by serving as TAs during fall, spring, summer, or challenge programs, helping high school students engage in hands-on projects in national STEM research areas while gaining valuable teaching, mentoring, and leadership experience. ROTC cadet Viet Tran worked in the Laboratory’s Homeland Sensors and Analytics Group developing docking systems for autonomous vehicles through the military summer internship program.
