Research and innovation through project-based learning

COVID-19 Update: In regards to supporting all student research and access to Beaver Works Maker Spaces, we are following MIT policies here

The MIT Lincoln Laboratory Beaver Works Center (Lincoln Beaver Works) conducts research and educational programs that strengthen and expand collaborative efforts between Lincoln Laboratory and MIT campus.  This collaboration

  • Provides opportunities for both institutions to make an impact on pressing global problems through science, research, and education
  • Leverages synergies between campus research and Lincoln Laboratory technology areas to generate innovative solutions
  • Exposes a new generation of students to opportunities in engineering, research, and service to the nation and world

Beaver Works is a joint center chartered by the MIT School of Engineering and MIT Lincoln Laboratory, operated by the Laboratory.  Dr. Robert Shin, Principle Staff in Lincoln Laboratory's ISR and Tactical Systems Division, is the director of the center.  Day-to-day operations are handled by the facility manager, Joel Grimm. The facility is open to all MIT students, faculty, and collaborators, and provides a nexus for innovation, collaboration, and hands-on development.

The Beaver Works Center was initiated in 2010 through a series of Lincoln Laboratory-funded capstone research projects in the School of Engineering.  In 2013, MIT and Lincoln Laboratory opened the new, dedicated center in NE45 designed to facilitate research, workshops, and class work through the creative fusion of collaborative spaces and prototyping facilities.

Capstone Projects

CubeSat

Space Systems Development

(Course 16.83)

Students build a space system, focusing on refinement of sub-system designs and fabrication of full-scale prototypes. Sub-systems are integrated into a vehicle and tested. Sub-system performance is verified using methods of experimental inquiry, and is compared with physical models of performance and design goals.

Ionobot

(Course 2.013/2.014)

Spring 2019

This Mechanical Engineering course designed and built a persistent and autonomous vessel to measure the ionosphere above open ocean and relay data back to stations

Carbon Neutral Cooling System

Carbon Neutral Cooling System

(Course 2.013/2.014)

Spring 2019

his Mechanical Engineering course designed and built a carbon neutral cooling system that uses waste heat for efficient inexpensive and inexpensive cooling.  Tested at MIT's co-generation plan on campus.

STOL

HyperSTOL

(Course 16.82)

Spring 2019

This course built a short take-off and landing (STOL) fixed wing drone to demonstrate feasability with flight testing on Plum Island
